Volunteer Spotlight: Vortex Oasis

Monday, July 13th, 2009

From the start of our NOTOCON planning Vortex Oasis, led by now past master Sr. Brandy, took on the project of creating our VIP gift “baskets”. This year, rather than baskets, Brandy had the idea to use tote bags, and chose to focus primarily on Pacific Northwest items in addition to a few items donated by local bodies.

Yesterday was the work party to assemble the bags, after the regularly scheduled Gnostic Mass. Vortex members demonstrated their industry and organizational skills by creating an assembly line that had us running in circles! But it also had the bags assembled in no time. Here are some pictures from the day. Enjoy!

Many thanks to the Vortex crew for their hard work and dedication!

Volunteer Spotlight: Brother Ken, King of the Runners!

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

I love this next volunteer spotlight. Brother Ken is a rock star of enthusiasm. His answers to my interview questions are, like him, light, fun, and to the point. They also make me smile! As Runner Coordinator, or as we like to call him, King of the Runners, Ken and his crew will be on hand through the weekend to step and fetch as needed. If you think this is a minimal role, you are mistaken!

How did he answer my questions?
How are you feeling about your upcoming job for the conference?
**Confident, ready to roll babe!

How is the experience comparing to what you thought it would be?
**Not enough to compare to so far, for me this question will be best answered after all is said and done.

What are you looking forward to at the conference itself?
**Meeting with and talking to brothers and sisters from outside the valley.

Do you have any advice for those who might wish to host NC?
**Cozy up to Soror Missy, listen and learn!

Anything else about NOTOCON that you’d like to share?
**The palpable atmosphere of warmth, caring and acceptance in gathering leaves one rejuvenated and joyful.

Thanks Ken!

And a word to you all. Brother Ken is the only one of you who can call me Soror Missy and get an answer.

Volunteer Spotlight: Brother Jon, Man Friday (through Thursday)

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that I might be a little biased bout my next volunteer spotlight. Jon is always there for me, through all of my crazy big ideas. He has seen me through the preparations for this conference like nobody else. And probably for the perfectly obvious self-preservation it brings him! Nevertheless, it is he who helps me solve my notobeast problems that keep me (and him) awake in the dark of night, and I am profoundly grateful.

The best advice I can give to the NOTOCON VIII Onsite Chair? Have a support system like Jon!

But what’s on Jon’s mind regarding the conference? Here’s what he said:

Let’s see, you are Stage and A/V Manager, have helped out with Media, are building Mass shrine pieces, and are giving your first ever national audience presentation for the Order that weekend. How are you feeling about your upcoming job(s) for the conference?

I would have to say I am feeling pretty confident. There is a great deal to do, but most of the preparation has been taken care of. We’ve planned for most of the issues we could foresee, and I know that our Brothers and Sisters will help us should any unforeseen trouble arise. There are still a few areas to iron out, but these are more polish than superstructure. The bones have already come together.

How is the experience comparing to what you thought it would be?

Bigger. I am definitely doing more than I signed on for. But I am looking forward to the conference, and I am pleased with the roles I have been given, and with my ability to meet the challenges, as well as the times I have had to ask for help. I’ve learned about my limitations.

What are you looking forward to at the conference itself?

Everything after I present. Before that, I will be nervous. Afterward, I will just chill and enjoy the rest of the ride.

Do you have any advice for those who might wish to host NC?

Pick a good team. There are many large jobs, and what you really need is a good team. Once you have a good team, communicate with them. They will see when you are under pressure, and they will step forward and share the load without being asked. That is the best. That is what builds a community.

Anything else about NOTOCON that you’d like to share?

To be honest, I would like to share everything about NOTOCON with the members of the Order who have not experienced it. To be in such wonderful company and to share fellowship that transforms into real friendships is the type of experience that people thrive on. It is a genuine opportunity to grow through service and interaction with an educated and illuminated cross section of humanity.
