Getting There Could Be Half the Fun: Take a Plane

May 14th, 2009 by Melissa

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

I was listening to the radio recently and learned that domestic airfare prices are at an all time low, with flights from just about anywhere to just about anywhere in the U.S. being below $300.00.

I checked MSNBC’s farecast and found flights from San Diego to Seattle going for $138…from Orlando, $227. It just might be the best time to get your plane ticket!

With shuttles from SeaTac Airport to our hotel, the Doubletree Southcenter, every 15 minutes, arriving by plane will be easy! [Note: Be sure you're headed for the Doubletree Tukwila/Southcenter, and not the Airport Doubletree]

See you at the con!

Get Uncle Sam to help pay for your trip to NOTOCON!

March 26th, 2009 by Vere

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Here’s how you can save money on your travel to NOTOCON:

Step 1: Keep your receipts.

  • Keep your receipts for airfare, hotel, car rental, parking, taxi, and any meals you purchase during your trip.
  • If you drive your car to NOTOCON, keep a written log of your starting mileage (when you leave home) and ending mileage (when you get back). Also keep your receipts for gas.

Step 2: Get a letter from your local body.

  • The letter should say that you attended the National O.T.O. Convention in Seattle, Washington on August 7-9, 2009 as a representative of your local body.

Step 3: Deduct the cost of your trip on your 2009 tax return.

  • You can deduct your travel expenses as a Charitable Contribution on Schedule A.
  • If you drove your own car to NOTOCON you can also deduct 14 cents a mile for the trip. Or, you can deduct the cost of the gas, whichever works out better. But you can’t deduct both mileage and gas.
  • Note: you cannot deduct your NOTOCON registration fee, nor the cost of items that you purchase from the vendors.
  • If you add some extra vacation time before or after the conference dates, consult with a qualified tax advisor to determine how to take the deduction.

All of the above also applies if you are traveling to any other regional O.T.O. event such as Kaaba, Initiator Training, etc.

Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions. And be sure to check out more tax tips for O.T.O. members.

Hotel Rooms at a FRACTION of the Price!

March 14th, 2009 by Melissa

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

You may be wondering how you can save some money at this summer’s NOTOCON. One answer comes down to simple sharing…room sharing to be precise. Splitting the cost of a room can help a lot. And if you take advantage of our roommate finding assistance, you may also have the opportunity to meet someone new from another part of the country.

If you would like assistance in finding a roommate for NOTOCON, contact Sister Cristin, at onsite_assist@notocon.org

She will connect you with potential roomies based on your preferences, the rest will be up to you.

Getting There Could be Half the Fun: Take the Train

February 22nd, 2009 by Melissa

There’s just something special about a train ride.

There is much less standing in line and taking off of shoes, there’s a bit more leg room, and a lot more choice regarding how you pass the time. Depending on how far you’re going, it can also be a cheaper alternative to flying.

Personally, I’ve taken the Amtrak Cascades route several times on trips to Portland and Eugene, OR, and with small exception the trip has been a part of my “get away”. Whether I’m hiding under headphones with my iPod, enjoying the movie, reading a book, napping, enjoying conversation with my travelling companions, or watching the ever changing scenery pass by the window, the train just seems…easy!

Much of the route for Amtrak on the west coast is beautiful waterfront and farmland scenery, and the trains are designed to afford the best possible veiwing of the countryside whenever possible.

And for those times when it’s not? Well, nothing is perfect. But if there are kids screaming in your designated car…get up, take a walk to the snack bar or dining car. The Coast Starlight has a double decked lounge car with big windows, so you can sip your cocktail and watch the world go by. Try doing that on your average airplane!

Are you travelling from points further afield? Take a few days and book a sleeper. Consider coordinating with others going to NOTOCON on your route. What fun to meet-up on the train! If the train is not full, the staff may be able to help you sit together. If not, well, it gives you someone to visit when you decide to take a stroll. But if you’re being economical with your time, using the train for destinations further Portland or Eugene just might not be the way.

Something to know when you book for west coast travel:

The train station closest to the Doubletree Southcenter is the TUKWILA station. Check your routes when you book, but I believe that only the Amtrak Cascades (runs from Eugene to Vancouver B.C.) stops at this station. The Coast Starlight does not stop at Tukwila, but goes through to Seattle’s King Street Station.

All routes coming from the east into Seattle will arrive at King Street Station.

Banquet Food Choices…

February 15th, 2009 by Melissa

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

Beef….chicken…vegetarian.

Such limited descriptions to make your dinner choice with.

As of this week we have more details to share.  Brother Jon and I had a lovely lunch date last Thursday at the Doubletree to taste several banquet options.  Together we narrowed the choices down and have chosen the main courses for our banquet menu.

First, I’m happy to say that our vegetarian option is also VEGAN.  It is also very tasty!  The chef took extra care to order a high quality vegan cheese to replace the feta in the original dish.  I had to ask to double check, because it was very good.

Our veggie/vegan dish is Penne Pasta Mediterranean, with artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, roasted garlic, capers, spinach leaves, and “feta” cheese in a garlic-plum tomatto sauce.

For our chicken dish, we opted for the Roasted Breast of Chicken, with wild mushrooms and artichoke hearts served with sun-dried tomato polenta and an herb au jus.

Imagine this one served next to some seasonal vegetables.

For the beef option, we’ve gone with a classic.  Slow Roasted Prime Rib of Beef-Rib Eye, with garlic mashed potatoes and rosemary au jus lie.  The photo that I took did not do this dish justice, and I think most of you know what prime rib looks like, so I’ll leave that one off.

So, you can now make your banquet meal choice and educated one.  Enjoy!

Drop Brick Waltz

*******

I am fierce about my freedom.  And yet, communities can do things that individuals cannot.  I joined the O.T.O. to learn how this paradox might resolve itself. Thelema had been a part of my life for 9 years prior, and if anything was going to provide a resolution, it would be related to Thelema. I wondered: could this random group of strangers hold themselves together by the thread of this strangely fluid and poetic philosophy? Could the differences between people create a more unified whole, rather than splitting under the force of their own dissent? Could one be a part of a group without sacrificing self to the slavery of mob-mentality? What is community for, and how do we dance as individuals within it? While I can trace my journey toward answers in my daily life, the placement of NOTOCON outside of ordinary life makes it a peculiar benchmark.

In 1999, I took my Minerval two weeks before NOTOCON was held in Portland the first time. .”You can go to NOTOCON now!”, someone exclaimed, directly following the initiation.

“Hm. What happens at NOTOCON?” I asked.

“Lots of parties!”, someone else answered.

 Er… I think I’ll pass…

I eased myself into the Portland O.T.O. community, experimenting, observing. Watching for what I could do to it, and what it could do to me.  Reaching for insight into the resolution of the paradox between the one and the many, I offered a piece of myself and waited for the results. Plop: a drop in the crucible. Plop, plop, someone else was adding drops.  And another…And another… Heat. Stir. Revealed: a brick.

 I got back a brick.

I gave more. In an intense and near-instant alchemy of recursion, my pieces transmuted through the community to become the stuff to construct the community, in turn generating pieces for the next brick. The strokes of my paintbrush became the walls of the Lodge. The strokes of my fingers became the code comprising the programs that connect us to the world beyond those walls. My complaints and processes became part of the structures that enable us to engage in the more important business of creation. And through all of this, my pieces were the pieces I chose to give. It was my own strengths as an individual I offered. And found that was all the community wanted anyway.

Curious. Unexpected. But could it hold up elsewhere, or were we just weird here? Let’s begin to dance.

In 2001, I went to NOTOCON in California. From my journal: .Love and joy and beauty, we come from everywhere, all things unknown to each other.  But those differences are where joy springs from; we are the wellsprings of life.. There it was…the paradox resolving. A group of radically disparate individuals, from all parts of the world, all classes, all as fierce as I am about their freedom, yet exploding into a transcendent whole, speaking as person to person; participating as individual to group: I talked to a lot of people. I had something to say to everyone. I even went to a room party! The experience of freedom within the group dynamic that I had in the Valley of Portland extended beyond our borders. The experience of freedom within the group was something that moved with us because of who we were, not because of where we were.

Now my participation in the Portland O.T.O. community is a natural extension of the momentum of my own life. And the community is a natural extension of me. The bricks of the community aren’t mine; they are my pieces mixed with the pieces of others, fused in the furnace of love and laid in the transcendence of completion. We dance together. We architect, build, destroy, engineer again. The things that make me and each person in the community an individual are what forge the bricks that are so innovative, and so strong. We dance together. How delightful that NOTOCON would be [in Portland] in 2003!

In 2003, I didn.t just go to NOTOCON. I helped build NOTOCON. I offered my pieces to manifest registration, Certified Initiator Training, the CIT Reception Art Show, and the media for the event. It was happening in my living room; I got to show people things I love and share my world with them. They shared themselves with me, delighting in our differences. I was not the non-participant of 1999, not the analytical observer of 2001. I was a star in the galaxy that was NOTOCON. And so was every other person there, whether they were observing, or participating, or engineering, or sleeping.

This is the dance: We are all individuals, fierce about our freedom.

This is the dance: The whole harnesses the power of that freedom to transcend the sum of its parts.

NOTOCON wasn’t just about my internalized experiences. It wasn.t just about my community in Portland, or about the NOTOCON committee. It wasn’t even about a conference at the Edgefield. For me, NOTOCON 2003 was about that brief bright moment where all of us manifested an island of beauty; a pool of light that is this revolutionary thing: A functional culture, each person building a whole without sacrifice of freedom, to manifest a galaxy of stars.

 The paradox resolves.

NOTOCON VII FAQs: Question #3

February 12th, 2009 by Melissa

Q)  Can someone tell me the policy regarding non-initiate/non-Minerval guests at NOTOCON?
My bf is a non-initiate. He’d like to attend. I’d like him to attend. But I’m not sure if he’d be permitted to attend any classes or anything other than the banquet.

A)  Initiates of Third Degree or higher may bring their spouse or partner to NOTOCON, *with the permission* of the USGL Conference Committee, and of Sabazius.  They’d still be restricted from events tyled to particular degrees.

If you meet this criteria and would like to pursue the matter further, contact Melissa at onsite@notocon.org
