Presentation Descriptions

“…for there are also of my friends who be hermits.”—The Hermits of the O.T.O.
Lon Milo DuQuette

For most of us, our work in the O.T.O. is focused on the mysteries and activities of the Man of Earth and Lovers triads—degree initiations, Gnostic Masses, and the education and social programs that enhance our mastery and understanding of Thelema. It takes many years to progress through these degrees, and at each step of our initiatory journey we are challenged by serious personal and magical ordeals that try our spiritual integrity, and test our patience and tenacity. In order for us to prevail and advance, our O.T.O. careers oblige us to grow to and evolve! But grow and evolve into what? Ironically, the goal of our years of butting heads with the militantly independent wills of our fellows in the Thelemic community...the goal of laboring to make the great Thelemic experiment work on a societal level...is to become a “Hermit”. Join OTO Hermit, U.S. Deputy Grand Master General Lon Milo DuQuette as he shares his thoughts and unique perspective on what it means to be a Hermit in the OTO. Not tyled.

A Ritual of the Law: The Mass of the Phoenix
Justin Bunn

This workshop will cover Liber XLIV: The Mass of the Phoenix, a solo Thelemic Eucharistic ritual as written and prescribed for daily practice by our Prophet, Aleister Crowley. After a short introduction there will be a demonstration of the ritual, followed by a lecture on the ritual's symbolism and many practical concerns, as well as an open discussion. Not tyled.

A View of the Stele 666
Norman Fleck

Rose Crowley’s discovery of the Stele in Cairo and Crowley’s reaction is vital to our foundation and should be understood by every Thelemite. This presentation will be a discussion of the Stele of Reveling which serves as a key element in the founding of the modern Thelemic movement. The focus of the discussion will be the Stele’s original function in pharaonic Aegypt, and the function of steles in general. The nature of the priesthood of Ankh-f-n-Khonsu will be reviewed with its importance to modern Thelema. Not tyled.

Aleister Crowley & the Abolition of Boundaries
Sister Beth Kimbell

Aleister Crowley, poet, priest, and “Wickedest Man in the World”, was not just a devil looking for some fun. He was a prophet and forebear to those who would be free. He did not work just so that we may play, but so that all can have true freedom in the pursuit of their Will. His aim was the Great Work, self-perfection, and the uplifting of humanity. Should we not be able to choose our own path and act in accord with the dictates of our soul? Orgies, gender-bending, trying the limits of body & mind; his path of initiation united sexuality with spirituality, aiming every act at Liberation, and he was vilified that we may know the strength to defend these rights. Heralding the New Aeon when we will not be slaves to the religions of restriction, nor have our lives dictated by our neighbors' morals, Crowley became the Great Beast, bringer of Light and Gnosis. Come hear of the methods he used, the scandals he knew, and how he became the 73rd Greatest 100 Briton of all time. Not tyled.

All Roods Lead to Rome: A Consideration of Catullus
Frater Hippokleides

The poet Gaius Valerius Catullus, one of the Gnostic Saints whose names are recited in the fifth Collect of the Mass, lived and died young in Rome in the first century B.C., leaving behind a slim collection of 116 mostly short poems. This workshop will examine a number of Catullus’ poems with the aim of discovering what Crowley saw when he acknowledged and canonized him in the fifth Collect as an example of those “that did of old adore thee and manifest thy glory unto men.” We will see that, among other things, Catullus’ poetry contains an exposition of the essential formula of the Gnostic Mass, as well as a veiled presentation of the Word of the III and a subtle analysis thereof. Knowledge of Latin will be helpful but not required, as English translations of all Latin passages will also be provided. Tyled to the Third Degree and higher.

Arousing the Coiled Splendor: Kundalini Yoga and Thelemic Magick
Frater Phoenix

This workshop will explore the role of Kundalini Yoga in Thelemic Magick by surveying the relevant writings of Crowley, Grant, as well as the teachings of Yogi Bhajan. Yogi Bhajans’s system of Kundalini Yoga was studied by both Grady McMurtry and Phyllis Seckler, and exploring its teachings is highly relevant to Thelemic Magick and Mysticism. To that end, Frater Phoenix will provide historical as well as practical understanding of the integral relationship between Kundalini Yoga and the Great Work as seen within the cannons of Thelemic Praxis. The class will consist largely of discussion, and PowerPoint presentations with some basic pranayama and kriya yoga techniques from Kundalini Yoga will be shared to make the teachings real and embodied for practitioners. Not tyled.

Babalon and the Beast: The Rise and Fall of Leah Hirsig
Michael Kolson

This lecture will delineate the history of one of the most interesting and important women in Crowley’s life. We will examine their history from their initial meeting, to Leah’s prominent role in Crowley’s initiations, and her own advancement from Scarlet Woman to Babalon. Particular attention will be paid to her time at the Abbey of Thelema and to her experiences, in her own words, culled from her unpublished diaries. We will also look at her supposed downfall, living on the streets of Paris abandoned, “cold and an-hungered” and the years after her time as Scarlet Woman. Not tyled.

Beyond the Great Work: The Holy Guardian Angel, Lucifer, & the Death of God
Colin Campbell

We are generally familiar with the Great Work and its principal text, The Book of Abramelin the Mage. With the advent of the New Aeon, Crowley changed the game, and the Great Work became something else, something greater and ultimately more powerful. This lecture will discuss the nature of the Great Work in its various stages: the preparation, death, and re-integration of the Ego-Self. We will then discuss the implications of this achievement, and what happens when we turn to face our most fearsome opponent: our concept of God. Not tyled.

Chi and the Star Ruby — A Ritual Demonstration
Soror Freyja

One of the best-loved rituals of Crowley gets a full-on presentation along with a demonstration of a yin form of Tai Chi, a Chinese martial art that can reveal insight into the use of body movement in ritual. In addition to effective body movement, discussion points will also include: use of voice for entering ritual space, the importance of ecstacy, the nature of chi, and the influence of Far East spirituality in Crowley’s magical system. A handful of audience members can be called up to learn a couple of moves that can impact ritual practice. This presentation is especially recommended for those new to this ritual, or those experienced magicians looking to see new possibilities in their practice. Not tyled.

Enochian — Scrying the 30 Aethyrs using the 19th Call
Onyieh Jewel

Crowley notes in The Vision and the Voice: “…for that in the Aethyrs is the knowledge of the Aeons, and of Thelema. And to each shall it be given according to his capacity.” The Enochian magical system created by Johannes Dee is complex and can be daunting. This beginner’s presentation will provide those with little to no knowledge of Enochian or little to no experience scrying the tools necessary to start scrying the 30 Aethyrs achieving results immediately. The presentation along with the handouts offers overviews of Enochian, the Aethyrs, the Astral Plane, the 19th Call and useful tips and techniques on how to scry. Not tyled.

Orientation in Ritual
R.C. Stein/EAOA/77

This presentation will elaborate on the meaning, use and integration of direction in the performance of magical ritual. The discussion of orientation as a crucial element in magickal practice will be accompanied by PowerPoint materials and practical demonstrations of ritual incorporating aspects of the presentation. Not tyled.

Original Crowley 1st Degree O.T.O. Intitiation
Coph Nia Oasis

This ritual presentation will consist of Crowley’s original version of the Initiation ritual for 1 M.M.M. This ritual is adapted from materials provided by USGL and presents a quasi-Masonic style ritual, that is entirely different from the ritual now in use by O.T.O. Coph Nia intends this as a sequel to the primitive Neophyte/Minerval ritual exemplified at NOTOCON IV. The ritual will be fully staged with appropriate props. Tyled to the First Degree and higher.

We will also go beyond the newsletter to discuss pamphlets, chapbooks, calendars, and even full-fledged books! Not tyled.

Ritual of the Clothes of Passage
David R. Jones

The Ritual of the Clothes of Passage was developed from Edward Kelly’s visions of June 20–25th 1584,as published in Meric Casaubon’s A True & Faithful Relation. This “Ritual Opening” unfolds the system of Enochian Watchtowers drawing from Kelly’s visionary descriptions and applying the liturgical formula of the 12 Banners contained in Dr. Dee’s “Fundamental Obeisance.” The magikal tools and methods used are faithful to the designs and instructions revealed by the angels to Dee and Kelly and include historically accurate reproductions of the Holy Table, Solomonic Ring, Lamen and other articles. Not tyled.

Sexual Outlaw, Erotic Mystic: The Life and Works of Ida Craddock
Vere Chappell

Ida Craddock was a late nineteenth-century spiritualist, sexologist, and activist who developed a method of sexual mysticism which has some intriguing similarities to that of the OTO. Aleister Crowley was so impressed with her work that he wrote: “She certainly obtained initiated knowledge of extraordinary depth. She seems to have had access to certain most concealed sanctuaries.” She died defending her teachings against moralists who sought to suppress them as obscene. Based on the importance of her writings, and the example set by her impassioned pursuit of sexual freedom, she was inducted into US Grand Lodge’s Order of the Eagle in 1999. In this talk we will explore the fascinating story of Ida Craddock’s life and death, and delve into the details of her three-degree system of “psychic wedlock”, tracing its development and examining the similarities and differences between it and the OTO’s magick of sexual gnosis. Not tyled.

Talismanic Magick in the Face of Uncertainty
Kayla Block

“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.” These simple words should be the guiding force of encapsulating one’s will into a magical talisman. But what if you don't know your own Will? Or what if your Will is hazy? What if you could capture and encapsulate your Will into a talisman by incorporating reflection and receptivity into the working? This presentation discusses utilizing YHVH to guide talismanic workings in the face of uncertainty. Tyled to the Minerval Degree and higher.

The Forgotten Founder: Henry Klein and the Early History of O.T.O.
Richard Kaczynski

Henry Klein (1842–1913) was the original Grand Registrar General of Ordo Templi Orientis, and—along with Theodor Reuss and Franz Hartmann—one of its three founders. While the life and times of Reuss and Hartmann are well documented, Klein stands in sharp contrast: despite being such a central figure, almost nothing has been known about him, his life, or his role in O.T.O.’s history. This presentation gives a much-needed overview of Klein’s life: from a German immigrant to England to his involvement in Freemasonry; his career as a composer, publisher, and musical instrument importer; and, his involvement in the early history of O.T.O., up to and including Crowley’s introduction. This talk is based on Richard’s original research into Klein for the new edition of Perdurabo and his monograph on Klein, The Forgotten Founder. Not tyled.

The Principles of Podcast Promulgation
Joseph Thiebes & Frater Puck

As Soldiers of Freedom, we posit that the Fight for Liberty is a real battle, waged on many fronts, not the least of which is that field of war known as the “marketplace of ideas”. Just as we discover our True Wills, and must persist in the face of contending Forces, the LOGOS of the Aeon—Thelema—ever battles in this marketplace, amid myriad contrary philosophies and ideologies. The Internet is the most pervasive and dynamic of ideological marketplaces, and as such, must be harnessed. The establishment of the Law of Thelema is fundamental to our purpose as an Order, and we contend that these technological tools are magical weapons in this cause. In recent years, the development of the podcast has opened a geometrically growing “connected” society up to a vast area of Ideas. With this Work, we further echo the Word of the Law, causing it to reverberate and resonate to all Stars, to those who are of us. In this panel presentation and discussion, Fraters Puck and Thiebes will explain and discuss their ongoing efforts to promulgate the Law through online media. Not tyled.

The Quest for Manifest Glory
Frater Hunahpu & Soror Ixel Balamke

The quest for great wine is a continuing labor of joy; however it pales in comparison with the noblest of all quests, the quest of the Great Work. In this presentation, we will explore the myths and legends of the most Noble of Quests that of the Holy Grail. In particular we will examine some of the lesser known tales associated with the Holy Grail. Along with our usual presentation of information, we will taste five rich wines. This will be our sixth wine tasting and they just keep exceeding expectations! The cost for the wine tasting is just $30 and is limited to 40 individuals. Tyled to the First Degree and higher.

The System of the AA: Methods and Tools of Attainment
Dr. David Shoemaker

The methods and tools of Aleister Crowley’s AAform the foundation of personal spiritual development in the New Aeon. But why do these methods work? Why are they placed as they are within the curriculum of AA How exactly do these practices lead the aspirant toward Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel? In this workshop, Frater Shoemaker will explore the psycho-spiritual processes active in the system of AA and provide answers to these and many other fundamental questions. Not tyled.

The U.S. Revival of the Rites of Eleusis, A Documentary
Jon Sewell & Melissa Holm

Originally staged at Caxton Hall in the fall of 1910, Aleister Crowley’s Rites of Eleusis lay dormant and unperformed for 70 years. In honor of the centennial of the original performances, Frater Sewell and Soror Holm have traveled the west coast interviewing those who fostered and witnessed their revival. These accounts have been formed into a documentary to be included in the Centennial Eleusis Project organized by Sr. Lutea. Join us for a brief introduction and viewing of this piece of O.T.O. history. Not tyled.

The Victorian Occult Explosion
Mark Dalton

This presentation will focus on tracing the sources of thought that converged in the explosion of interest in the occult in the late Victorian era, both in England and the United States. We will examine the revolutionary ideas of Mesmer and Swedenborg, the origins of Spiritualism in the “burned–over district” of upstate New York, the creation of the Society for Psychical Research, and the rich stream of occult thought present in the period. Stemming from Cornelius Agrippa, through Ebenezer Sibley, to Francis Barrett’s “The Magus” and its influence on Eliphas Levi, this current affected Blavatsky, Mathers, and, of course, Aleister Crowley. This presentation will add color and detail to our understanding of the magickal world swirling around Crowley when he entered and began to perfect our Order. Not tyled.

Thelemic Occulture: Creating & Promoting Thelemic Culture through the Arts
John P. “Snakedaddy” Hanley

The presentation will consist of two parts. First, there will be a short overview of how earlier cultures used art to create and reinforce their cultural ideals. Also, I will touch on how art has been used through the years as a means to communicate Secret or Occult Knowledge to initiates, and how it managed to influence the larger Society or Culture. In the Second Part, I will discuss how we, as Thelemites, can use art & music as a means to define our culture, not only amongst ourselves, but to the culture at large. As part of this discussion, I will also point out how, in my own experience, Thelemic art can be used not only as a promulgation tool, but also one for raising funds for individual bodies. Should there be time, I will have a brief Q & A session. Not tyled.

Trigrammaton Qabalah
R. Leo Gillis

The focus of Frater Gillis’ presentation is the explication of the Qabalah developed from Aleister Crowley’s “Liber Trigrammaton”. A wide range of material will be discussed, including magic squares, I Ching, Tarot, sacred geometry, English Gematria, and Liber Al vel Legis, using charts, graphs, and various images. Not tyled.

We Antichrists
M. Dionysus Rogers

Order leadership and senior initiates have been at justifiable pains to distinguish Thelema from vulgar Satanism. At the same time, it is undeniable that an antichristian impulse was inherent in the work of our Prophet, who called himself both an atheist and “the truest of all Christians.” This presentation will discuss the development of the concept of antichrist throughout the Old Aeon, and its fulfillment in Thelema. It will include a survey of the Thelemic Saints and heroes who have been recognized as antichrists, as well as a discussion of the sources and expressions of Aleister Crowley’s opposition to Christianity, and it will culminate with an appeal to the “inner antichrist” of each Thelemite. Tyled to the Minerval Degree and higher.

You’ve Heard This One Before: Humor in Occult History
Craig Berry

Aleister Crowley said that “The common defect of all mystical systems previous to that of the Aeon whose Law is Thelema is that there has been no place for Laughter.” I don’t think he was giving proper credit to the sages and hierophants of the past. As long as adepts have sought the Light, they’ve been telling each other goat jokes. Come along for a meandering journey through several millennia of laughing Buddhas, comical carpenters, mirthful Masons, and more. We’ll also take a side trip into the hidden mysteries of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Not tyled.
